100_0586Landscape Designworks can install walls, walks, and patios of almost any material, size, and style.

Retaining Walls:

Stone, Boulders, Flagstone, and modular block are all styles of retaining walls. Landscape Designworks can design and install any one of these types of walls.

The type you choose can depend on many things: Personal taste, soil type, function, and budget. We will work with you to choose the best type of wall for your project.

Recent projects we have worked on include using “Chilton” flagstone, as produced by Buechel Stone in Wisconsin. This is a limestone, with many colors, that can be used for decorative, as well as functional retaining walls. “Sandstone” from the east side of Michigan is making a comeback as a popular choice for walls.

In SW Michigan, boulders are a popular choice for retaining walls, as the material is found in local gravel pits. Boulder walls can blend into the landscape well in wooded settings.

Modular blocks have become more and more popular in the last few years, as they are now coming in several sizes, styles, and colors. Typically LDW will specify  Rockwood brand blocks, as manufactured by Consumers Concrete, or Fendt brand blocks. Both companies make high quality blocks, with many options for just about any site, or budget.

Sidewalks/ paths and patios can be made of many types of materials, depending on their location and use. LDW can design and install many different materials for your next sidewalk/patio project.

Brick/Pavers: A popular choice for sidewalks in Michigan. LDW will usually install pavers over a sand/gravel base. LDW usually specifies Fendt pavers, or pavers from Consumers Concrete.

Stone: Patterned Bluestone makes a nice, even sidewalk to walk on, and the blue color is a great feature in the landscape. LDW usually uses Select New York Bluestone for sidewalks and patios. Irregular flagstone is another popular choice for sidewalks…although it sometimes is too uneven for a formal “front sidewalk” situation. LDW will usually recommend irregular flagstone for a less formal path, or secondary sidewalk.

Concrete: LDW works with one of the area’s top concrete finishers, Doug Wolthuis, to provide sidewalks and patios from plain, colored, and stamped concrete. The design possibilities are endless with concrete.
